Lord Of The Rings TV Series: Everything We Know

The battle for the big screen is over. The battle for the small screen has just begun.

Lord of the Rings fans listen up!

The wait is finally over! We have a name, artwork, and a trailer for this long-awaited TV series from Amazon Prime Video.

The Prime Video Original series: The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will officially premiere on Amazon Prime on Friday, September 2, 2022. It will air in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide and have a weekly episode schedule.

It was back in 2019 when Amazon made the announcement Tolkien fanatics across the world had been waiting on. The opportunity to go back to Middle-earth, a fantastical place where we go to dream and escape, is now coming to fruition.

Here is everything we know about the show so far:

What it’s about

Audiences will be whisked away to Middle-earth as tales of the fabled Second Age unfold onto our small screens, telling epic stories of the legends that lived during that time. The series will be set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and treat viewers to a lucid world full of imagination and darkness: tales of Númenor, the last alliance of Elves and Men, the emergence of the Dark Lord Sauron, and the forging of the rings of power.

Following an ensemble cast of characters, from “the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone” (Prime Video).

Title Announcement

Amazon revealed the title of the already coveted TV show via a mysterious fiery trailer. We can now refrain from calling it the Amazon Prime Lord of the Rings TV show and use its official title:

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power

First and foremost, the name has a nice appeal to it as it tells audiences exactly what to expect from watching this new series. This is the backstory we need to see now as a live-action visual representation: how the rings came into being and the twisted evil mastermind behind their creation.

Out of numerous possibilities we believe the creators have absolutely, one hundred percent picked the right name for this show.

Title Teaser

The teaser starts off with a familiar sound – one that we should all know as fans. What looks like misty plains and an eerie landscape, thunderously flash cuts to flames of molten lava, and then a soft voice begins to speak these words:

Teaser Trailer

It’s pretty difficult not to get excited about this as a LOTR fan!

We had a suspicious feeling this would be released during the Super Bowl LVI (Sunday 13, February, 2022). During a sixty-second commercial spot, Amazon were able to transfix and transport fans into Middle-earth, just enough time to get everyone even more excited about the forthcoming TV series.

Prior to the big game, the Prime Video social accounts boasted that the trailer would “arrive precisely when it means to” – if you know, you know. Watch parties took place all over the internet, just so everyone could relish and experience this masterpiece together.

What a magnificent start to our journey back to Middle-earth.

From the visuals we have seen so far, the cinematography looks simply stunning and very much reminiscent of the Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings films. We’ve had a bird’s eye view of places new and familiar, are introduced to fresh intriguing characters, creatures and mystical beings, watched as battles unfold, magic is conjured, and journeys begin.

Out of everything that has been released so far, what Amazon are calling the teaser trailer is what we had been waiting for, and what an epic first trailer it is. Now, we believe that the darkness is yet to come as this looks a little mythical and light-hearted at the moment.

The reaction for this trailer from around the interweb currently is that some fans feel absolution, excitement and joy, and some perhaps might be taking things a little personally, victimised by the sheer emergence of such a trailer and critical to the brink of destruction.

However, this does not include us here at Screen Bunny. We love it and can’t wait for the next one. The passion of Tolkien fans is true and very serious business, voices and opinions matter and should not be taken lightly. We do hope the collective enjoy this series and hope it finds new audiences as well.

Now that we have the first teaser trailer to keep us ticking over, it is likely that we can expect something to crop up at Comic-Con or a fuller trailer(s) closer to its official release date 22 September 2022.

All we want to know now is, is all of this Peter Jackson approved?

We cannot wait for summer to come, bring it on, all of it.
