Hi, Barbie’s and Ken’s!

We can honestly say that this movie is without a shadow of a doubt, one of the best films of 2023. The film gained awards attention including, eight Oscar nominations. Barbie also won ‘Cinematic and Box Office Achievement’ at the Golden Globe Awards this year.

In the early stages of development, both Margot Robbie (Actor and Producer) and Greta Gerwig (Director) explained the challenges that came along with making this movie into a reality. However, any fears or complications have now been eradicated by the overwhelming success of this film.

Here is our Barbie review.

Barbie background

The Barbie movie starts in Barbieland and depicts a perfectly pink world that is fit for all of the Barbies (and Kens). All is sweet until Barbie starts to malfunction. Her feet are now flat, she falls out of her Dream House, and she even gets cellulite! To fix this she must venture into the “real world” and find the girl that is playing with her, and make her happy again.

But the real world is not what she imagined it would be, her kid does not want her and Ken discovers patriarchy. This is when the film takes an interesting turn. Ken takes over Barbieland and now the Barbie’s must fight to regain their turf. During which, the unraveling of Barbie leads to teamwork that will forever remain valuable life lessons for all.

The film is fuelled with a lot of emotional quirks, but perhaps one of the most vulnerable scenes is near the end when Barbie discovers what it means to be a real woman in the real world. Cue the Billie Eilish flashback scene.

Margot Robbie is Barbie

Margot Robbie – in our humble opinion – was the right actor to bring Barbie to life. Margot conceptualised the famous doll in a way that only she could, and cultivated a part of cinematic history. During the press campaign, Margot and her stylist continued the Barbie-themed party with iconic looks from some of the most famous Barbie dolls. If there was ever a perfect actor for this role, it’s Margot.

However, the film would not be complete without Ken. Ryan Gosling played a huge part in creating a Ken that the audience would love, and would want to see more of in the future. He has many fascinating scenes, but the one that broke the internet was his ‘I’m Just Ken’ routine. Not only is this such an addictive tune, it created an incredible amount of press for the movie. Ryan performed a rendition of this at the Oscars this year as it was nominated for ‘Best Original Song’.

The beauty of this Barbie and Ken is that [spoiler alert] is that in this movie, they actually don’t end up together.

A film you will want to watch over and over

Barbie is one of those films that you can happily watch multiple times and somehow always manage to find something new. With an array of Barbie’s and Ken’s from all walks of life – even ‘Weird Barbie’ – there is a Barbie, a Ken, and an Allan for everyone.

All of the cast were perfectly in tune with the mood the film was trying to convey, which is clear to see, and you can tell they had a lot of fun making this. The storyline and sparkly cinematic backdrop provided an ideal setup for our cast to strive and play their parts magnificently.

Without giving too much away, the essence of Barbie is about being yourself and following your dreams – no matter what you look like, where you come from, your beliefs, or what you choose to do with your life – all from a female perspective.

Barbie box office makes history

The Barbie movie has officially made box office history! Hitting over one billion dollars at the global box office, making it one of Warner Bros. most profitable films ever. What an accolade to have.

The marketing for this film was absolute genius. If you take a look back at all of the PR buzz you’ll see that Barbie had several official premieres in cities across the world including; Los Angeles, London and Seoul. The press tour was also ramped up through social media events and various special pop-ups.

Warner Bros. literally turned the world pink for a couple of weeks during the Barbie promo.

Our overall opinion of the Barbie movie

There is absolutely no getting away from the fact Barbie has played a major role in 2023 pop culture, and arguably, brought back the joy of going to see a film on the big screen. Some say it was the film that saved cinema.

It is a popcorn flick with major flavour, sprinkled with sparkle and charm. No matter what age or gender you are, if you have ever played with a Barbie doll, perhaps this film will speak to you in a way you never thought about before.

There is a definite feel-good factor to be experienced here – over and over again.
