The Fall Guy fell short at the box office
pinksoop rating
3.5/5
  • This film is a love letter to stunt performers and an entertaining popcorn flick best enjoyed on the big screen.
  • The ‘Barbenheimer’ duo joins forces in this explosive blockbuster.
  • Ryan Gosling delivers an electric performance worthy of praise.
  • The Fall Guy and the disappointing box office returns – will this have an impact on a sequel or will the fans have the final say?

The Fall Guy is a fun-filled, explosive, energetic popcorn flick that promises cheesy lines, comedy and absolute banging stunts.

Brought to us by real-life stuntman and film director David Leitch (Bullet Train, Deadpool 2, Atomic Blonde), this film shouts appreciation at the hard-working crew members who make action movies what they are.

We saw this film on an IMAX screen which amplified the entire experience whilst providing brilliant sound quality.

Here is our review of ‘The Fall Guy’.

A love letter to stunt performers

Synopsis: Retired stuntman Colt Seavers, still bearing the scars of his dangerous profession, is pulled back into action when the lead actor of a major film suddenly vanishes. As the mystery around the missing actor (Tom Ryder) intensifies, Colt becomes entangled in a sinister plot that threatens to push him into a peril even more hazardous than his former high-risk stunts.

This film encapsulates the brilliant work that stunt performers do behind-the-scenes- to bring these jaw-dropping scenes to life. It was awe-inspiring to watch this film as it has not only put the spotlight on film stunt crew, but created a conversation around the importance of their role on set and how they should be recognised for the work they do.

The “Barbenheimer” duo link up

Both Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt were involved in two of the biggest-selling movies of 2023 – Barbie and Oppenheimer. However, the success of these movies would not mean The Fall Guy would automatically win at the box office.

The duo work well together in the film to an extent but their was something slightly lacking about their on-screen chemistry. Individually, they’re excellent in their respective roles, but when brought together, their interactions don’t seem entirely genuine and a bit forced at times. This may have been the filmmakers’ intention.

That being said, each had some exceedingly good parts to play. There is fantastic scene where Emily Blunt’s character Jody Moreno pelts out a rendition of Phil Collins ‘Against All Odds’ on karaoke whilst a montage scene plays out of Gosling’s character attempting to dodge the bad guys.

For the role of Colt (Ryan Gosling), the script did give off Ken vibes, but it worked because of the nature of the film and the character involved.

Ryan Gosling delivers explosive performace

Thanks to the Barbie movie, Ryan Gosling will now forever be known to us as Ken. However, he has proved that he is more than Kenough, and he is absolutely great at doing all of the stunt stuff in this movie.

His ability to entertain and captivate audiences is still very much at the forefront of his agenda, especially in movies like The Fall Guy where he has opportunities to make people laugh, cry and get on his side.

Don’t get us wrong, we loved Ryan Gosling in previous films like The Notebook (2004), Drive (2011), The Place Beyond The Pines (2012), The Nice Guys (2016), and La La Land (2016).

We can’t wait to see what he does next. According to iMDb, Gosling is currently working on a film called Project Hail Mary, directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, set for a 2026 release.

The box office dilemma

Films like this are fun to watch and for us, make the cinematic experience 100% worthwhile. There is a mix of emotions in this film, educational factors, and top-class stunts! Even with all that, including marketing, this film could not be saved from our modern way of life.

With an estimated budget of around $150 million, the overall box office takings were around $145 million. A disappointing performance for a film of this stature. However, with critical acclaim and social buzz, this film might just impress and excel on streaming platforms. And if it does, there might be a chance of The Fall Guy 2. Ryan Gosling hinted at this in a recent red carpet-interview.

Overall, we really liked The Fall Guy. Blast this film on your big-screen TV, turn the  sound up, grab your snacks, and get ready for an explosive ride!

Available to rent or buy on all major streaming platforms.
